Linn County Undersheriff Jim Yon reports his deputies are investigating the death of an elderly woman on Green Mountain Road, approximately 2.5 miles up the gravel road near Gates.
Today at 6:40 a.m., Linn County 911 received a call from a truck driver who was picking up gravel from a nearby gravel pit. The truck driver reported seeing a vehicle stuck in the mud and found a deceased white elderly female lying outside of the vehicle. Fire personnel arrived on scene and the female was pronounced dead. The death does not appear to be suspicious in nature.
The name of the deceased person is being withheld pending further investigation and notification of family. Sheriff’s deputies were assisted by Gates Fire personnel.
Update: The female lying outside of her vehicle was identified as 90-year-old Ellen Marie Mazzeo of Gates. The investigation reveals Mazzeo had driven up Green Mountain Road for an unknown reason. It appears she tried to turn around in the roadway at a closed logging gate and her vehicle became stuck in the mud. Mazzeo at some point exited her vehicle and fell to the ground. Further investigation revealed Mazzeo used a cane and had a history of falling. Deputies believe Mazzeo had not been able to get back up on her own and likely succumbed to the elements.
Mazzeo was transported to Stayton by Weddle’s Funeral Home.
